The School of Human Settlements was formally launched on 19 September, as the 12th school within the Xavier University family, by Fr. Augustine SJ, Registrar Xavier University, Bhubaneswar.
School of Human Settlements would continue to run MBA and Ph.D programs in Urban Management & Governance; and start master’s and Ph.D programs in Urban and Regional Planning.
The inaugural address was delivered by eminent academic Prof. Om Prakash Mathur, Senior Fellow, Senior Fellow and Head, Urban Studies at the Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi. and former director, National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), New Delhi. Prof. Mathur underscored the need for capacity building in the area of urban planning, management and governance, due to India’s rapid urbanization.
Subsequently, a panel discussion was organized on the theme: Career Opportunities in Urban Management and Onward Visions for the School. The discussion was chaired by Prof. Dinesh Mehta, Professor Emeritus at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, and former director NIUA and UN-Habitat. The other panelists were Mr. Srinivas Kowlogi, Partner E& Y, Mr. Shankar Arumugham, JLL-Chief Operating Officer Strategic Consulting, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh & Nepal, Mr. Dev Bhattacharya -Group Executive President and Business Head of New Ventures, Aditya Birla Group; and Dr. Sudhir Krishna, IAS (Retd.)- Former Secretary (Urban Development) Govt. India and Former Chairman, the Fifth Delhi Finance Commission. Additionally, an exhibition was also organized on the theme: City in the eyes of the young beholder, which showcased posters prepared by the students on issues related to urban informality and various city systems analysis.
