Collaborative Research on Smart Wise Inclusive Cities – India Pilot

XUMG-Xavier University, Bhubaneswar actively collaborated with Collaboratory for Urban Resilience & Energy (CURE), Manchester Urban Institute, University of Manchester (UoM), and the Department of Architecture, Town and Regional Planning, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur for Smart Wise Inclusive Cities – India Pilot project, March 18 – 24, 2018

This research proposal investigated the role of smart city technologies in urban transformation. Powerful and innovative, smart technologies often disrupt embedded political, economic and social structures of the cities. At the same time, they also bring new opportunities for Smart Wise Inclusive Cities (SWIC). The SWIC model manages a smart technology innovation process, in full engagement with societal / developmental policies: i.e. social inclusion, anti-poverty, anti-corruption, sustainable business, and effective open governance. To do this needs new methods for mapping / analysis of urban technologies and socio-technical systems.  The research will apply the ‘smart-wise’ method and ‘synergistic’ mapping toolkit, to explore the underlying learning and feedback in the urban system. Fieldwork would include stakeholder interviews and workshops. The research points towards emerging concepts on collective urban intelligence (the ‘deeper city mind’). The project also has strong policy links: to the Indian National Smart Cities Mission.

As part of the project a stakeholder consultative workshop was held on 23 March 2018. The workshop was and the research was coordinated by Prof. Joe Ravetz (UoM), Prof. Tathagata Chatterji (XUB) and Prof. Souvanic Roy (IIEST). The principal investigators were:
