Urban Management Municipal Immersion (UMMI)

Urban management municipal immersion is part of the Urban Management and Governance curriculum. This field-based exercise aims to familiarize the students with real-world challenges faced by the municipalities to understand the implementation of projects and schemes on the ground. The students gain holistic experience about a small town’s developmental processes and to understand the functioning of an elected Municipal Council, including its organizational framework, financial conditions and services delivery mechanism. It enables our students to develop an analytical perspective about the complexities of horizontal and vertical coordination involved in the processes of urban development. For this, students visit different urban local bodies for 35 to 40 days to explore the same. This year students visited Nashik, Sawantwadi, Berahrampur, and Rourkela. Prof. Nalin Ranjan was the coordinator of UMMI. The students received valuable feedback from the municipal chairperson/commissioner and also they have been appreciated for their hard work during their stay.

Plan for West Bengal Transport Corporation (Wbtc) Users
Prof. Tiyali Bose
This capstone project developed a plan that will help the public service operators to determine and prioritize services based on user’s perception in Kolkata city. This study presents an overall framework to determine the ZOT of bus transit users followed by determining LOS scale values for bus transit services based on user perception using the Law of Successive Interval Scaling and demonstrates the method by applying it to the user perception data collected from bus users in Route 47, Kolkata. The study compared the results with the LOS standards established for most of the developed countries like the USA, indicating a difference in user perception between developed and developing countries. Similarly, comparing the LOS scale values obtained for Kolkata with those established by the Ministry of Urban Development, India, confirmed that experts’ opinion differs from that of users’ perceptions to design scheduled headways between two consecutive buses arriving at bus stops. Likewise, the information available on LOS scales for the other transit service attributes can also be used to design and improve bus transit services in a given city

Poultry Slaughter Waste Disposal in Bhubaneswar
Prof. Nalin Ranjan
The project assessed the quantity of waste generation, utilization and its disposal practice of poultry slaughterhouse in a cluster of unit-7 and unit- 8 of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. The study observed that a greater number of slaughter centres are located on the roadside and are non-registered. The owners did not know safe disposal. There was no existing provision for segregated collection and disposal of poultry slaughter waste by the BMC. Although, a part of the waste was collected privately in an irregular manner more than 50% of non-collected waste was disposed of unscientifically. The comparative study on the feasibility of disposal and operation model indicates that it can be disposed of safely after processing by poultry slaughter waste rendering plants with the end products of protein-rich meat/feather meal for utilization as bio-fertilizer and fish/pet feed and the oil as a source for biodiesel
